For me there is no clear distinction between painting an abstract or a figurative work.

A set of visual elements organized well is what makes a portrait or a landscape convincing.

A painting is always abstract inside, though it can be figurative on the surface.

I was lucky enough to have been taught to paint portraits.
Portrait painting is like any other painting plus a little extra.
...or a lot....
